Settled in the 1870s as a gold and silver mining camp, Telluride was incorporated in 1878. In 1964 it was deemed a National Historic District. The Mountain Village lies over the ridge from Telluride, accessible by skis or snowboard via the ski mountain, or by a 12-minute gondola ride from Station Telluride to Station Mountain Village. The town of Telluride was founded in the late 1800s with a mining boom. And with all the gold and silver, the local bank made a tempting target, and was purportedly the site of Butch Cassidy's first heist, netting him a take of $24,580. Telluride is located 127 miles southeast of Grand Junction and 125 miles from Durango, CO.
